Wii Game Quality Control

Kotaku has an interesting post today about the mixed quality around third-party developed games for the Wii. The author, Mike Fahey, points out that Wii games not developed by Nintendo rarely live up to the standards of quality as those that were developed by Nintendo.

The company has even addressed the issue in a conference call, which Fahey pulls the following quote from:

“On any system you will have a range of quality. Publishers are working extremely hard to take advantage of the Wii and it’s unique abilities. Those publishers who do a great job enjoy fantastic sales. As publishers understand how to take advantage of the unique aspects of the remote you will see better and better games. We already have a certification program and publishers need to conform with a number of key aspects to get certified. What we don’t do is have some sort of filter for quality, because quality is so subjective. Nintendo is working hand in glove with publishers to share with them our level of expertise with the technology.”

Just how far Nintendo’s hand is actually in the glove is anyone’s guess, but I think it’s good that they are at least acknowledging the subject.

I rented Zach and Wiki’s Quest for Barbarosa’s Treasure this weekend, one of the first 3rd party games for the Wii, and it’s probably better than most of the Nintendo licensed titles. Third parties are essential if you want long-term playability and interest, something Playstation won people over on back in the day.

I got my sons a Wii for Christmas, and some relatives got them some third party games, out of four only one of them is worth playing (Mercury Meltdown: Revolution)

Lack of quality third party titles can really mess up momentum for a gaming system, I hope Nintendo learns from the past.

I would buy a glove like this for my husband – he is a quadriplegic and misses playing his wii because of his loss of hand function – this would be great for him
