Wii Domination: Rated AO - Suitable Only for Adults
A wise man once said “April is the cruellest month”. Sony and Microsoft would probably agree with him now that April’s Console sales numbers have been released. The NPD Group, released its April 2007 report for hardware and software monthly sales numbers. We’ve been hearing for a while now about how badly the Wii is out pacing it’s competition — but these numbers are ridiculous.
Check it out, here’s what April looked like in terms of hardware sales:
Nintendo:
* Nintendo DS 471,000
* Nintendo Wii 360, 000
* Game Boy Advance 84,000
Sony:
* PlayStation 2 194,000
* PlayStation Portable 183,000
* PlayStation 3 82,000
Microsoft:
* Xbox 360 174,000
So when you add em all up here’s what you get:
Nintendo: 915,000
Sony: 459,000
Microsoft: 174,000
Basically, if you add Sony and Microsoft together they still come up about 282,000 units short of catching up to Nintendo. Sony only managed to sling 82,000 PS3 units in April. Nintendo sold more units of their 4 year old Game Boy Advance (84k) than Sony sold PS3 (82k). Sony’s biggest seller is still the PS2 which actually outsold the XBox 360 by 20,000 units.
Nintendo may have a reputation for being the ‘kiddie console’ company but the beating they’re giving their competition right now that can only be described as NC-17.
And the brutality isn’t limited to hardware. Nintendo also dominated software sales. Pokemon Diamond and Pearl (DS) flew off the shelves to the tune of 1.7 million in about a week. Super Paper Mario , Wii Play and Guitar Hero II (Xbox 360) rounded out the top five.

Count me in on the “May purchases” list. Finaly found one at the local Fry’s. They sell quick here in Sacramento. While I “ooh and ahh” at the graphics of the other systems, the bottom line for me is playability and something new.
I’ve only played with the packaged sports pack and Zelda so far, with Tiger Woods golf still in the wrapper on my shelf, but love that I don’t have to learn 50 buttons on a remote to play a game. I just want to pick up the remote and start swinging.
Big kudos to the Nintendo designers on making this a system that puts the fun back into video games.

I’ve made my contribution to the May wii total.
One thing we need to bear in mind, though, is that 360 has been out a lot longer and still tops out in terms of total units sold to date — about 10 M total, whereas the wii is just short of 8 M. You can definitely see from the numbers you reported that it’s only a matter of time before that changes and we see wii on top — even allowing for the burst in 360 sales that is sure to come when Halo 3 is released.
My read of this is that this battle of the console wars is effectively over, with the order now Nintendo on top, followed by Microsoft, and Sony trailing. However, the battle is not the war, and the war is far from over. My prediction is that both Microsoft and Sony are back in the lab as we speak, working intensely on their own versions of the wii gameplay experience. There is a chance that they may attempt to release some version still yet for the current consoles. What seems quite certain is that we will see both come out swinging in the next battle in a couple of years time with their own take on the wii….
