Nintendo’s Wii is a bestseller, yet, from a game designer’s standpoint, it’s not a particularly complicated platform. Ditto for the DS. These facts led Rob Fahey to ask, “Does Nintendo’s triumph herald a golden age for independent developers?”
Well, not yet, anyway. Fahey writes, “The reputations of independent developers as Wii or DS dev houses will be made and broken in the coming 12 to 18 months, if not sooner. A name for high quality, efficiently delivered Wii and DS projects would be a feather in the cap of any studio - and could, at last, provide the kind of stability indie developers have craved for years.”
And don’t forget - a golden age for developers is going to look pretty good to players, as well.
