The sale figures of video game hardware in August has been released by NDP. Once again, Nintendo won the competition as their Wii system took first place as the system that sold the most units in the U.S. The approximate figure of Wii systems that were sold in August is 404,000 units. The second place award goes to Nintendo’s portable system, the DS. It sold 383,000 units last month. Microsoft’s Xbox 360 received third place with a total of 277,000 systems sold. Finally, The previous generation system from Sony, the Playstation 2, sold 202,000 units. The fifth place winner is Sony’s handheld system, the Playstation Portable. It sold just over 150,000 systems. Sony’s Playstation 3 console sits in the last place with just 131,000 systems sold.
There is no information about the Gamecube but if people still bought gamecube systems, I think it would be listed in the last place because it would be better to invest in a Wii system than a Gamecube system right now.
The report from mercurynews.com says the Wii systems continues to sell out within hours which is not a surprise to me since I think that it will have the same effect as the DS which continues to have strong sales even though it was released for over a year ago.
Microsoft’s Xbox 360 increased in sales because of the $50 price cut which happened in mid-August. Two months ago, they sold just 170,000 units.
