Ahh, another Friday is upon us and another weekend is on the horizon. My favorite part of Fridays is doing the Top 5 list, and letting you know just what I think is so great about the Nintendo Wii (or what needs to be improved). Just so everyone knows, my plans for this weekend is to beat Death Jr. for the Nintendo Wii, and try to ascend the Tower of Souls on Soul Calibur IV (if you have a 360 or PS3, I highly recommend SCIV). But enough about my plans, let’s get to today’s Top 5 list for WiiBlog.
There’s been a lot of talk in gaming blogs, news sites, forums, various game store locations about Iwata’s comments about Nintendo currently developing the ‘Wii 2′. For anyone who’s ‘in the know’ with video games, the fact Nintendo is developing a system is no real shocker. Miyamoto has claimed in the past that developing for the Wii started in the very early years of the Nintendo Gamecube. Of course Iwata gave no details for the system under-development, more than likely cause it’s still in the brain storming stage. So here’s my 2 cents on what Nintendo might want to do for their future console.

5. – Wireless Nunchuck-Wii Remote Compatibility – Unless Nintendo decides to come out of left field and create a completely new controller for their next system, then how about improving their existing one. Pretty much everything current gen is wireless. The controllers are wireless, internet connection is wireless. Unfortunately, the nunchuk has to be connected via wire into the wii remote.

I Feel Like I’m Doing Curls When I Use The Wireless Nyko Attachment
This problem has been theoretically solved by Nyko, who released a wireless adapter for the nunchuk. My review of the peripheral is mixed, as it performs well, but it makes the nunchuk much heavier than it needs to be. So hopefully for the Nintendo Wii 2 we will see built-in wireless connectivity for the nunchuk and wii remote, while remaining lite.
4. Streamlined Online Experience – You ask any gamer what their pet peeve about the Nintendo Wii is, and I’d say an educated guess is that 7 out of 10 would say Friend Codes. To be fair Nintendo has toned down on the friend code necessity, as the last few games to go online haven’t required friend codes to enjoy most of the experience (MK: Wii, SSBB). Instead of just saying “get rid of friend codes NOW!!!”, I say how about totally doing a revamp on the entire online platform for the Nintendo Wii 2.
In looking at how to incorporate online functionality right, Nintendo should definitely look to the other console makers for inspiration. When I’m trying to see if a friend is online with my Xbox 360, or PS3 it’s as easy as pressing 2 buttons. I know Nintendo likes to do things their own way, so how about signing on an instant messenger developer to create a unique and nifty widget for the Nintendo Wii 2. I’m sure AOL, MSN (maybe not so much), or Yahoo would be glad to come up with some instant messaging technology for the Wii, and get their brand name on the console. I’m not a huge stickler for achievement points or trophies, but this is another feature that Nintendo shouldn’t feel too bad about ripping off. Gamers love to brag, and showing off their conquests for the video games they play only adds to that drive for success.
3. Brand New IP For Launch – We all love the tried and true mascots from the house of Nintendo. Mario is still the most recognizable mascot in video games, and we all love to play his games. But why not bring in a new character to co-exist with Mario and the others. A launch title would be the perfect time/place to pull off such a new and creative idea.
The Nintendo Wii was and for some is still a new experience in gaming. So, when Nintendo decides to enhance the experience even further with their next console release, how about a brand new gaming experience with a new character. Having a new Mario game, and a new IP would be the optimal launch setting though (let’s hear it for the Mario launch games of the past).
2. Head Tracking – I feel like I’ve talked about head tracking until I’m blue in the face. The reason being because the idea behind head tracking is so freaking amazing, it deserves to be driven into the brain. Instead of explaining it, and why it needs to be in Nintendo’s next system, here’s the video (yet again), and you can devise your own reasons why it should be featured on Wii 2.
1. Blu-Ray Compatibility – I’m no psychic but I think the reason why the Nintendo Wii didn’t try and push any kind of technical barriers was the chance it was taking with motion controls. There’s no telling sometimes how people are going to react to things, especially in the technology market. So, instead of using top-end but expensive technology for their console, they kept it under-powered but affordable. The formula definitely worked, as Nintendo is pretty much bathing in twenty dollar bills at the moment.
But now that Nintendo knows that motion controls are catching on, I think they can afford to up the ante in the technical department. If you’re to follow the timeline that console makers are giving (in that current gen consoles will have a 6-8 year timeline), then I think this is plenty of time to bring the Nintendo Wii into true HD. Blu-ray movies are continuing to drop in price, along with the players and drives themselves. I think that by the time that Nintendo’s next console releases, a blu-ray drive would be relatively cheap to install.
I’ll leave you with this, just imagine a Mario, Zelda, Star Fox game presented in majestic 720p, or 1080p. The thoughts of it alone make me want to drool all over this keyboard.
What are some ideas you would want to see for the Nintendo Wii 2? Do any of my ideas suck, feel free to expalin why.

I like all of your ideas. A true, classic launch title should be a must. None of this Wii Sports or Wii Play. Give people a game that everybody will be talking about. One of the worst things Nintendo did with the Gamecube was have Luigi’s Mansion as its big launch title. Super Mario Galaxy wasn’t released until after the launch of the system (as was Super Mario Sunshine on the Gamecube).
I think it would be nice too if Nintendo would realize the benefits for them and for gamers if they expanded on the storage capacity issue. SD cards are great, but expand that harddrive or offer a worthwhile alternative.
And if there are USB ports on the next system, it would be nice if they could actually be used for something, anything! Keyboard?

HD would be so freakin’ amazing… When I found out the Wii wouldn’t even have 720, I was so annoyed…
Then I would want a hard drive, and hopefully they’ll do that with this Wii…
Your other ideas were good too. But I wish they don’t call it something as predictable as Wii 2. I mean, they should just go back to Revolution XP.

I think that maybe just as interesting as bluray support (or even a bit more interesting even) is HD support at all from the “next Wii” – 1080p graphics in the games would definitely rule supreme, and probably also totally kill the sales of any other same-gen console

My idea for the next Wii? Games.
Thats not to say that there isn’t games, but I have 15 wii games and I find myself not playing them because none of them are truly compelling. Also, very few of them lend themselves to being friendly to ‘pick up and play’ for 10 minutes when my son is asleep (Due to long loading times/menus or whatever for mario party for example)

yes, HD support would be amazing…I just think that by the time the next Wii comes out, Blu-ray will be coming close to be the standard format

i think that if wii was to go full hd with the next generation it would probably be best if nintendo just upgraded the curent systems for free and offer a system that has been upgraded for sale in retail that way nintendo doesent force there fans into buying a new system if thy want to be up to date. which would really hurt the company. also they should include some kind of multimedia ad-on like microsoft did with the xbox

This blog is very great if nintendo just upgraded the curent systems all the best.

I think that the new ideas are great. Another good improvement would be to improve the sensing abilities and games. Graphics as good or even better than the ps3 would be nice. And wouldn’t it be awsome if there sensing controlers for your feet.

I think that for the next super smash bros. the designers should include, if at all possible, Batman from the recent movies Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, and Mega Man Zero from the game boy advance games. I think that such characters would greatly contribute to the next game, which shouldn’t necessarily have to wait for Wii 2. Also the addition of Mega Man X could only help the popularity of the game. All of thse characters are very popular and I think that they would be very effective characters when playing the game.

i hope they come out with an head set for wii and more online games

Nintendo should either include the capability to download the entire game to the onboard hard drive or SD memory or have at least a 5 disc changer so that you don’t have to unload and load games all of the time. I’m not sure why the consoles haven’t done this yet.

I have a great idea for a new game. How do I go about getting my idea out there? Is there someone I can talk to?b
