This Game Situation Has to Change

:

Lack of games is a subject I have touched on in the past, but I stopped by the local GameStop on my lunch break today (for the first time in quite a while) and realized that there’s not so much a lack of games, but a lack of games that I have even a remote interest in playing.

Now I am just one man, but I don’t think I’m alone in feeling that the biggest part of the Wii’s catalog is just uninteresting to anyone over 10 years old. Of course the fact that Nintendo has always aimed a little more toward kids games is nothing new, and maybe I’m just getting old, but there’s got to be room for some more stuff.

It’s not even just the amount of kids games. There’s nothing wrong with having a lot of those, but I look at the walls of XBox 360, PS3 and even PS2 games and I see so many more interesting titles.

Impatient

Half of the Wii games I saw today are just variations on what’s been available on Wii Sports from day one. Tennis, bowling, golf, etc, etc, etc. I’m not saying that there are no interesting titles, but when compared with other consoles it’s kind of sad. I don’t want 3 tennis games and 6 golf games. I would like a wider variety of concepts to choose from.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the Wii, but I’m afraid that if they don’t do something about the game situation this incredible demand that we’re still witnessing will take an enormous u-turn. I would hate to see that happen because the technology of the Wii is awesome and it’s an incredibly fun system to play with a whole lot of potential.

I keep telling myself that it’ll just take a little time. What do you think?

Yeah, I hear you. We currently only own Sports, Play, and Prince of Persia. However, we are about to go on a Wii shopping spree and pick up Mario Galaxy, RE4, maybe The Godfather, and we are getting in line for Rock Band when it comes out.
Case in point, have had this for over 6 months and picking up three games isn’t exactly going to make anyone rich.

as a dad I love the abundance of younger oriented titles and since my game time is limited i’ve found enuff for me to keep interested. but i do agree there is a lack of inovation for a great new ui, as time moves on i think we will see great new styles of gameplay not possible on any other platform…
that said im a new owner and maybe if id had the system longer id be more frustrated by the game choices, or lack of.

I totally agree. Hopefully, this issue will be resolved with time.

Completely agree with you and one more thing that I personally don’t like about Wii is its graphics,PS3,Xbox360 or PC’s next-generation games are so well detailed that you want just to stop and enjoy the atmosphere. Certainly after the gameplay comes graphics and if both are done properly then game becomes a best-seller. So if Nintendo will improve its games graphics then chains for Wii games will be kilometers.

I have a major issue with the game creators just punting out the same game on different platforms. The whole point of the Wii is the unique way it’s played. Now if it’s your only platform, then all games are fine, but if you purchased the Wii (like we did) for the pure play factor, then you really don’t get the benefit of it by sitting on the couch holding a different shaped, wireless controller compared to sitting on the couch holding a two handed controller..

We need more games that encourage you to move about, otherwise there is no difference in this system from any other.

  6. Crum Says:

Mookie, that is a great point too and I totally agree with you. That kind of brings to mind my post the other day regarding Wii and exercise…if more active games that require you to move around a lot start coming out, that will be a step in the right direction for not only fitness, but fun entertaining games as well…Obviously there is Wii Fit on the way, and I’m sure others will follow, so again it comes down to patience I guess…patience and hope…hope that Wii Fit itself is entertaining for that matter.

  7. AO Says:

Well, between Mario Galaxy and Guitar hero, I’m content, but… I’d really kill for the following:
    a good racing game
    a hockey game

  8. claude Says:

oh man, i good hockey game would be sooo sweet on the wii.

  9. claude Says:

    meant “a” not “i”

The lack of interesting titles is the main thing that’s keeping me from buying one. I fear it’s a one-trick pony.

  11. Crum Says:

Jeffrey, I understand your concern, and I’m afraid that point of view will turn into the majority, which is why “something needs to be done about this game situation”.

I’m not to the point yet where I think it will be a one-trick pony, but we need to start seeing some more before that becomes the general consensus.

  12. Crum Says:

By the Way, Jeremy has started a similar conversation at WiiSpin if anyone’s interested in hearing some other points of view.

I had no interest in gaming until introduced to the Wii. As a fitness professional I immediately saw the potential of the Wii as a mode of exercise. I have wiisearched for many months and have created the term Virtual Fitness which defined is exercising with the Wii. You can tune into my show Virtual Fitness (www.blogtalkradio.com/virtualfitness) for more info. The point I want to make here is that I have tried Ravin Rabbids (LOVE it and Shake Your Booty is a great workout!) and WiiSports (play everyday), WiiPlay (play sometimes) and Wii Dance Dance Revolution, The HOttest Dance Party. I play incessantly and with intent hours per day and have uncovered limitless ways to be challenged physically and mentally just by repeated playing of WiiSports and DDR. I invite you all, if you think you know everything there is to know about WiiSports and DDR (I can show you how to be an expert) visit my show and perhaps you’ll be surprised. We haven’t begun to even scratch the surface of the power and influence of Virtual Fitness in the 21st century. There’s such a wealth of information I feel left to be uncovered and shared with WiiSports and DDR.

I agree. And I agree with Mookie’s comment about more innovative gaming experiences such as getting up and moving around and engaging in video games in a manner that isn’t “normal.”

A friend of mine (I sent him the link to this post) recently put his Wii up on eBay because of the lack of games for the system as well as the lack of easily accessible online playing. I’ve also been waiting for the 3rd party developers to branch out from the PS3 and the X360 to support the Wii with some better (*cough* more mature *cough*) games, but it doesn’t seem to be happening fast.

Does anyone know when we can expect more 3rd party developers to jump on the Wii bandwagon?
