Generally, I’m not a fan of posting scans of magazines that you should rightfully buy if you want to see the content. However, Famitsu isn’t available stateside so I don’t mind posting these scans of New Super Mario Bros. Wii.
They show off some screenshots of levels previously unseen. Also, we get to see all of the Koopa Kids congregated together. I’m hoping for a little sub plot where the Koopa Kids are secretly trying to disintegrate Bowser Jr. Hey, one can hope.

Have you ever wondered what the geniuses of our world do with their spare time? Does Bill Gates play shuffleboard? Perhaps Steve Jobs enjoys hustling pool when he’s not thinking of the next name for a Mac OS. Fortunately, we now know one thing that Shigeru Miyamoto enjoys doing in his spare time: measuring things.
In a one-on-one discussion with Satoru Iwata, Miyamoto states how he enjoys measuring things:
Miyamoto: I’ve always enjoyed guessing the lengths of objects, which is why I carry a measuring tape around with me.
Iwata: Really? That one’s new to me too!
Miyamoto takes his hobby seriously, and continually puts his measuring skills to the test:
Miyamoto: For instance, I might guess that the table in front of us is about 1.2 metres long. Then I’d actually measure it with the measuring tape to check. If I got it right, I’d think: “I’m on form today!” But if I missed the mark by a long way, I’d think: “I’ve been slipping a bit recently!”
Iwata: So it’s a kind of barometer for what sort of form you’re in? (laughs)
Miyamoto’s obsession with measurement doesn’t stop there. He then discusses how a weight measurement game would be fun using the Wii Balance Board. The idea sounds highly simplistic, but I think it might be a fun time filler with the family:
Miyamoto: You can walk around with a measuring tape but you don’t find scales all that commonly, which makes it very difficult to check the weights of objects. That’s why I’ve always thought that using the Wii Balance Board to play a weight-guessing game would be great. For instance, we could make it like a school sports day. Get ten people together and hand out cards to each person. Then for instance, Iwata-san, you might get a card that reads “12 kilos” and I might get a card that reads “3 kilos”. Then we’d all split up and go around the school…
Iwata: …And we’d each have to bring back something which weighed that much.
Miyamoto: We’d each put the object on the scales and the person who got closest to their target weight would be the winner! (laughs) Doing something like that would be great fun, wouldn’t it? You don’t think it would be fun?
Iwata: Um… Sure! (laughs)
So, there you have it. Miyamoto’s discussion of how he loves to measure things. Perhaps it’s the trick to being able to come up with insanely popular ideas. I say, go out and buy some measuring tape today…

The video game world has officially lost a legend today, and coincidentally didn’t directly have any involvement in video games. Captain Lou Albano, who is mostly known as a wrestling legend, for a short while was one of the largest icons in video game history — Mario. The details of his death haven’t fully been disclosed at this point, but he had a history of heart problems. The most recent being a heart attack in 2005.
If you’re 20 years or younger you perhaps have no idea what or who I’m talking about, so let me explain.
During the late 80′s, Mario was the most popular entertainment character with kids. During this time kids recognized Mario more than they did Mickey Mouse so that gives you a good barometer of how much of a hit he was. Mario’s popularity grew to such massive proportions that it was inevitable the video game character would cross over to other entertainment mediums, the first being television. Thus, The Super Mario Bros. Super Show was born.
The show was a mix of live action comedy and short cartoon stories that came on every Saturday morning. Looking back, the entire thing was silly but by god it was a good time all around. And thinking about the show always provides good memories. Captain Lou Albano played the live action version of Mario, and although the show only lasted 52 episodes will always be the Italian plumber from Brooklyn.
So, here’s to you Captain Lou Albano. You will forever be Mario in the hearts of gamers around the world. And in fitting fashion, let’s take one more step and then again….come on everyone, Do The Mario!
R.I.P – Captain Lou Albano
There have been some amazing holiday seasons in video game history, but I think for the Nintendo Wii 2009 could be it’s best yet. We’ve got New Super Mario Bros. Wii to look forward to, and the upcoming fighter Tatsunoko vs. Capcom soon after. If you’re giddy with anticipation then you should be glad to know that the final characters of the game have been revealed.
First, is Joe the Condor which if you’re a fan of Gatchaman should help complete the roster from the anime series. I personally must plead ignorance as I’ve never watched one episode of the series. Here’s a character design screen for those who are jonesin’ for some Joe the Condor.

The second character reveal will have you screaming with delight if you’re a fan of the Mega Man X series. The fan favorite, Zero, will be swinging his green energy sword all over some chumps come January. After watching his gameplay video, he will play completely different than Mega Man which is a treat, because of their different play styles throughout the years. Below is a character screen, and gameplay video.

Square Enix has been known for some crazy antics throughout the years. Remember, this is the developer that made a Mario RPG become one of the greatest games of all time. Also, they created a series based on fusing the world of Final Fantasy and Disney together. Guess what, the series turned out to be amazing.
Therefore, it shouldn’t be a huge surprise to hear that Square Enix will be tapping into the decade defying band Bon Jovi for their Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles japanese commercials. As crazy as it may sound. Square Enix has signed non-gaming musical talent before but generally it’s been Japanese pop stars providing their vocal talents to a title. So, when hearing Bon Jovi would be lending their talents for promotional work on the game it raised a few eyebrows in the gaming community.
Not surprisingly, Bon Jovi has a brand spanking new album coming out soon. It just so happens that the song being used for the Final Fantasy commercials is off their new album. There has been no official announcement if the Bon Jovi/Final Fantasy collaboration will make it’s way stateside. My crystal ball tells me it will though. Which might just make YouTube explode.

In case you haven’t heard about it, Cyberbike is an exercise game that will come bundled with a full size exercise bike. Which in turn will be compatible with the Nintendo Wii. Yes, you read all of that correctly.
The game is making a huge splash online, and I’m sure the relative unknown developer Big Ben Interactive is smiling from all the coverage. If you want to see exactly how the game plays out, here’s the first trailer which shows off some gameplay:
