If you're someone who happens to love horror and retro gaming, then we have some good news to share as it appears that a new Clock Tower-esque point-and-click horror title is currently in development for the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis.

Created by the indie developer BadTasty, The Bagman is coming to Sega's 16-bit platform, as well as modern consoles and PC (via Steam), and takes inspiration from horror films and slasher flicks of the past.

GenesisFan64—a Mexican homebrew coder who worked across pretty much all of Sega's consoles—has passed away, we're sad to report.

The news was broken on social media a few days ago and was spotted by @PigsyRetro, another Sega-focused homebrew developer who is currently hard at work porting Castlevania: Symphony of the Night to the Genesis / Mega Drive.

Back in 2023, Sega announced that it had tracked down and painstakingly restored the Sonic the Hedgehog statue that once stood in London's short-lived SegaWorld indoor theme park.

That statue has now taken pride of place in the company's new office, based in Chiswick Business Park, London.

Outtrigger was a somewhat unique release for Sega when it hit arcades back in 1999; the company was hardly well-known for its FPS escapades, and the coin-op's combination of joystick and trackball presented some barriers for casual arcade players more attuned to simple, accessible experiences.

Nonetheless, the game became something of a cult classic when it was ported to the Dreamcast in 2001, complete with support for the console's mouse-and-keyboard control setup and—most importantly of all—online play (a feature that was sadly removed for the game's European release).

Decompilation is a complex process that turns 'executable' code back into human-readable source code, and is a vital step in 'recompiling' games as native PC ports.

Back in the 1990s, Sega's popularity in the UK was so pronounced that it largely overshadowed Nintendo during both the 8 and 16-bit eras, and this dominance was perfectly illustrated by the company's sponsorship of F1's European Grand Prix at Donington Park in 1993.

"It was a 'floating' Grand Prix, and no one else wanted to sponsor it," recalls former Sega UK marketing director Simon Morris. "If you ever watch Asif Kapadia's excellent documentary film Senna or indeed anything to do with F1, you'll know that the opening lap that Ayrton Senna recorded during that race – in which he overtook four drivers in the driving rain – is acclaimed as the best lap ever by fans of the sport," explains Morris. "It's impossible to show that lap without showing Sega branding."

We're counting down the days until the release of Yuzo Koshiro's Earthion, which still doesn't have a solid release date but is surely just around the corner now.

To whet our appetite further, Yoshiro recently posted a video which shows the game running through a range of different speaker options. At the low end, we have the 300 Yen / $2 Daiso stereo speakers, which, unsurprisingly, offer a pretty weak experience. Koshiro also runs the game through the Sony Trinitron KV-14DA1's built-in speakers, which is better—as you'd expect from a set which cost around 30,000 Yen / $200 at launch.

When Sega began its work on creating the 32-bit Saturn console, it assumed it would have the market all to itself, more or less; Atari's Jaguar and the 3DO were struggling, while Sega's Mega Drive / Genesis still enjoyed a decent share of the global market.

Of course, newcomer Sony threw a spanner in the works by releasing its PlayStation system at the same time—a console which, in many ways, offered a superior experience and, in the fullness of time, would garner significantly more third-party support, outselling Saturn by a ratio of ten-to-one.

Capcom's Dungeons & Dragons Collection was one of the final Sega Saturn releases in Japan, and brings together the company's two side-scrolling D&D fighters, Tower of Doom (1994) and Shadow Over Mystara (1996).

While both games were released in arcades in the West and have since been reissued on new platforms, the sought-after Saturn collection, being a Japan exclusive, has never been available in English—until now, that is.

Accessory maker GuliKit teased a successor to its Elves controller last year but is only now lifting the lid on it—and it appears to have taken a massive amount of inspiration from Sega's Saturn console.

The Elves 2 Pro boasts Hall Effect analogue sticks, wired and Bluetooth connectivity, around 20 hours of stamina on a single charge and Maglev vibration.

The Sega Dreamcast appears to be enjoying a mini-revival lately. We've seen new control options and VMU replacements, as well as community-led projects which have seen the likes of GTA III and WipEout come to Sega's defunct 128-bit console.

It would seem that another PS1 classic will be joining WipEout on the Dreamcast, thanks to the efforts of @nihaomawoq. As highlighted by @falco_girgis on social media, a port of Reflections' Driver 2 is currently in development.

We adore the Sega Saturn here at Time Extension. While it only managed to sell a fraction of what the rival PS1 managed, it is home to some of the greatest video games of its generation, and many of those rank amongst the best games of all time.

As much as we love the console, it's fair to say that some of the decisions Sega made back in the '90s didn't give it the best chance of success. One particular event took place 30 years ago yesterday, with Sega surprise-launching the console in North America with less-than-ideal consequences.

When the Dreamcast launched, I was fully invested in Sega's ecosystem. Sure, I'd flirted with the PS1 and N64, but the Saturn—with its generous selection of 2D fighting games from Capcom and SNK—was my go-to system at that point. It was hopeful, then, that Sega's next system would continue this tradition, and the arrival of titles like Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Street Fighter III, Capcom vs. SNK 2, King of Fighters '99 and many, many more affirmed that.

There was one big problem—the standard Dreamcast controller was terrible for fighting games, at least compared to the legendary Saturn six-button pad.

Indie developer Dr. Ludos has teamed up with physical publisher 2Minds to bring Dangerous Demolition to the Sega Game Gear, a title which is described as a fusion of Atari's Breakout with a top-down shooter.

"Don't you hate when the ball is taking ages to hit the last remaining brick?" asks the developer. "Now you can shoot to guide it and finally kick this brick! But beware, if the ball hits you, you'll get wiped out too!"

A new PC-based Sega Saturn emulator is doing the rounds called Ymir, and it's already showing plenty of promise despite only being at v0.1.2.

When Giants Software—creator of the best-selling Farming Simulator series—announced it was creating a version for the beloved Sega Mega Drive / Genesis, many people glanced at their calendars to make sure it wasn't April 1st (it was the 11th, so quite close).

This wasn't some kind of low-effort prank, however; Giants Software really has created a retro version of its monster franchise, and while it naturally can't hold a candle to the main series, it's a fun little bonus for longstanding Farming Simulator fans.

The latest update, Beta 2.75 brings the total number of characters up to six, adding Street of Rage's Axel & Rival Schools' Batsu to a roster that already included Sonic (Sonic the Hedgehog), Ryu (Street Fighter), Akira (Virtua Fighter), and X (Mega Man X).

If you own a Sega Saturn, then chances are you're aware of Optical Drive Emulators like Rhea, Phoebe and Fenrir. These devices allow you to run games from solid-state media and are massively convenient when it comes to enjoying the console's entire library.

Hiroshi Kawaguchi, the composer of classic Sega titles such as Space Harrier, OutRun, and After Burner recently announced he had "retired" from Sega, causing a wave of tributes to be paid to the legendary musician from English-speaking corners of the internet.

But it appears there's some important context that has been lost in translation as the news has begun to spread to non-Japanese social media users, with Kawaguchi having also announced shortly after that he was immediately hired back to the company the following day as a new employee, meaning he will remain at Sega for the time being.

It's amazing to consider that Altered Beast has never had a good sequel. It was one of Sega's biggest coin-op titles of the late '80s, boasting huge sprites and iconic sampled speech, and it would later help the company to launch its 16-bit Genesis / Mega Drive, even becoming a pack-in title in the West. For many, Altered Beast is the game that kicked off their Sega journey, so why has Sega struggled to make a half-decent follow-up?

2002's GBA title Altered Beast: Guardian of the Realms wasn't even developed by Sega; instead, production was handled by 3d6 Games and the game itself was published by THQ. In 2005, Sega tried to update the template with the PS2 Altered Beast, which set the action in the future.
