@AeonicB Imagine this. I purchased a steam deck AND I'm still getting a Switch 2. It's almost like not everything is a competition that you have to pick a side on. If you don't want the Switch 2 that's fine, but damn bro, quit being so dramatic. I really doubt anything they've done would actually change someone's mind, you probably just can't afford it and that's okay. Sorry they can't just give out everything you want for free. Welcome to the real world.

I encourage criticisms of Nintendo and have a fair bit of my own, but nothing so far has been bad enough to sway me from buying the console. Even the worst ones have pretty reasonable explanations for those of us who are rational. Unfortunately, Nintendo will never have to fix their mistakes because the people who are making fair criticisms can easily be lumped in with those who are irrational. Like seriously, you think a CRT filter is going to convince anyone to either buy the console, or now cancel their preorder? Of course not. But since so many people are acting like it's the end of the world, Nintendo can just ignore the criticisms and never provide an explanation.

Like I dunno man. $450 isn't even a big ask for a console with the Switch 2's capability. Do all the math and the logic, and as much as people hate to hear it, $80 for a game from time to time isn't even unreasonable. Maybe just skip Mario Kart?

Who am I kidding. This will fall on deaf ears. Well, I'm going to enjoy my switch 2 next Thursday that I got almost for free by trading in my Xbox. I have pity for anyone who chooses anger instead of happiness or even indifference.

The 64 Switch emu has a lot of problems , right ? (I've not used it myself ).

It could be a technical problem .

For all the ***** Nintendo gets about things like this , they've never had my passwords get hacked by pirates , try to kill/cheapen 2D gaming , make exploring batteries and electronics that catch on fire , make hardware they know will break in that console's lifetime , etc

There clearly isn’t a technical reason as to why they can’t have a CRT filter on Switch 1. They could have released GameCube games on the original Switch NSO if they wanted to (Mario Sunshine and Mario Galaxy already exist). So they’re clearly using GameCube games as a differentiator for Switch 2, just seems odd they’d use a CRT filter for similar reasons.

As for those saying nobody cares about it, well yes I wouldn’t buy a Switch 2 just for this reason. But the lack of a CRT filter does stop me playing N64 games on NSO. They look awful as they currently are. They’re too clean and clear, they need to be blurred up dramatically. Although I don’t know yet if the CRT filter is any good or not.

CRT filters look terrible at low resolution, and the Switch 1's screen is 720p. My guess is that it's being locked off from the Switch 1 for that reason. Blown up to the size of a TV, you definitely want the Switch 2's 4k support for this sort of thing.

This is annoying, but not as annoying to me as the Switch 2 upgrade pack stuff they’re selling for certain games; every Switch 1 game runs in an emulator on Switch 2, and several will require purchase to unlock the “Switch 2 Edition”, with frame rate and resolution boosts, and DLC in some cases. In other words, charging extra for features that are already built in to the Switch 1 emulator provided by the $450 Switch 2.

@Goj Not really- the Switch 1 is an absolute potato. Nintendo got Super Mario Sunshine running pretty well, but my understanding there is that the code was recompiled (effectively translated) in advance, making it a hybrid of native and emulation.

If you try running even an older, faster version of Dolphin on an old PC, you'll see that just emulating 6th gen consoles on an Xbox One or PS4 is already a huge undertaking, and those are well ahead of the Switch.

@snk2d4life I can tell you this will be the first time in many a decade I won't buy a Nintendo system, either near-launch or New.

Their recent attitude has pushed me towards getting a Steam Deck instead. If/when I do get a Switch 2, for some reason, I can guarantee it'll be pre-owned.

filters =/= shaders. a filter can be as light as just a semitransparent .png applied over the screen, the "performance issue" for keeping this out on switch 1 is nothing but lies

A garish CRT filter is not worth getting worked up over.

Just the fact that it took this long for them to add in-app controller configuration is mind blowing. I have a few N64 specific layouts saved. At the end of the day, it's all just noise. Gimme my GCN games and MKW next week and DK in July!
