I love Wii U, but the Game Pad has this stupid thing which is that it's always on, looking for a nearby Wii U, so the battery is constantly deteriorating. Worst feature ever. That said, I still use my Wii U. I bought the official high-capacity battery back in the day, which is still fine.

Mine looked fine, but I recently swapped the battery in my Wii U with a much larger third party one. I hope third party options continue to be available into the future.

The fortunate thing is they're user replaceable.

PSA’s like this always annoy me.

Don’t just check device X, check ALL your devices. You should inspect anything with a battery every couple of years if not more so if it’s over a certain age, even internal non-user replaceable ones. It’s the same with capacitors, they can let go anytime and let loose pcb corroding materials.just because you don’t have say a game gear or Mac from the period does not mean you shouldn’t be checking everything else.

If you decide to keep or aquire old tech you should be willing to do or get someone else to do the checks and maintenance that go with owning something beyond it’s expected life expectancy and keeping it working.

It’s also why you should be careful about not sticking things in the loft or garage for years because you are exposing batteries to conditions that will accelerate the issue.

The battery in my hacked white Japanese Wii U was fine but the official expanded battery I had installed in my original black gamepad has expanded. 😢 So I'll need to see if I can get a replacement.

I actually upgraded my battery in my gamepad a month ago. The original batter was fine, but only last a few hours while I played WInd Waker HD. I ended up getting a 8500mh battery lol. Thing will still die if I don't play for a week, but when I do play after a charge, the battery lasts.

Yes I have I checked both my Wii U 32GB Deluxe consoles work and my Gamepads work every few weeks/months.

I don't have any homebrew to test, but I know the coloured ports and disk drive sounds at this point.

One of my Android phones is over used and the battery/charging port is stuffed.

While my PSP/DS (DSi I have an OG DS for GBA only use on occasion) are a bit hmm of batteries yet worked fine when I left them alone compared to my extended use of them into the Vita/3DS gen as didn't have them till now with 2017/2022 Vita both models and 2020 New 3DS XL. So yeah both those are doing fine of batteries.

So besides my Nokia Lumia 520 Windows Phone battery or my Nokia/HMD Android 8.3 5G that battery is stuffed even more then my Nokia/HMD Android 5.1+ with a bend port I can still get around.

Not bothered with my Motorola or some old cameras either batteries.

I replaced mine recently but it was not swollen, the battery life just sucked so I got a much bigger battery that works like a charm.

My battery's fine, but I have had a few DS batteries get swollen on me.
Also had an Atari Flashback Portable do that, and it wasn't even that old :(

My Wii U GamePad batteries are still fine and not swollen. I have the original battery and a 3rd party high capacity battery. I use the high capacity battery most of the time, but every six month I charge up the original Nintendo battery to keep it in working order. (I recall reading an article suggesting this a while ago, may have been initiated by Nintendo.)

@HammerGalladeBro Probably the easiest would be contact Nintendo and see what they suggest or set up a repair with them.

I just got a new pad in the mail last week - no issues with it. I have replaced the battery on one of my older units though.

About 6 years ago it started pushing against the back of the GamePad. Took it out and bought a new one. Bought an extra replacement battery and two more charging cables. The rumble motors need replaced and thinking about updating the screen. I love my WiiU so much. It and the Dreamcast are the most underrated consoles.

Bought a used WiiU in 2019 and no swelling yet. My day 1 Switch on the other hand swelled up a few years ago and I finally replaced the battery.

@HammerGalladeBro iFixit sells replacement batteries for the GamePad, ones said to run longer than the stock one. I installed one in mine almost a year ago, perfect fit, works good. I guarantee the battery will not explode on you, unlike some of those dodgy no-name Chinese batteries.

Oh I have a few back ups on mine. The one i have installed is only about two years old and its a long life one , so i get a good amount of time between charges.

Plus a i bought a pack of four , so I am good for a while.
The original one was so poor in terms so f how long it stayed powered for.
