NPD Sales: Wii Strong As Ever

NPD recently released sales figures for the month of February, revealing that Nintendo are once again dominating the hardware market, with the Wii beating out both the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.

Sales for the Wii throughout February eclipsed more than 335,000 units, second only to Nintendo’s DS handheld, which sold through a massive 485,000 units.

In contrast, Xbox 360 sold 228,000 units with Playstation 3 bringing up the rear with 127,000 units.

If that wasn’t enough to please fellow Wii fanatics, the software front was equally as impressive, with Wii Play occupying the number 2 slot behind Crackdown. Meanwhile, Links latest adventure, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, is still going strong at number 4 followed by WarioWare: Smooth Moves at number 9.

this is true wii onwners the wii will fade like nintendo gamecube and so on…

    The Wii Fad Will Fade
OK, this one’s going to be controversial, but I have to say it. I like Nintendo a lot. I think Nintendo has innovated far more than any other company in the industry. And I think the Wii is really, really fun. But… let me relate to you a story that may sound familiar:

Your friend Reggie invites you over for a Wii Party. It’s awesome. You and your friends partake in whatever beverages are legally appropriate for your age group. The next day everyone who went to the party rushes out and buys a Wii.

A week later Reggie hosts another Wii Party. This time only half the group comes. It’s still fun, but there isn’t quite as much shoving to get at the Wiimote.

The next week Reggie hosts another Wii Party. You tell him you have bird flu.

Obviously I’m exaggerating, but the Wii does have many characteristics of popular mainstream fads. It’s instantaneously accessible, it’s unlike anything you’ve tried before, and it’s great fun to share with friends. In short, it’s everything Nintendo said it would be and it has captured the world’s imagination. The only downside is that the world is easily distracted. Tickle Me Elmo captured the world’s attention at one point, as did Furbies. They were both instantly accessible, were unlike anything people had seen before, and were fun to share with friends. But a year later, after everyone had seen them and tried them out, their popularity waned.

The Wii is currently riding on a massive wave of mainstream attention and has been purchased by lots of people who don’t normally play games. But how many of those people who are hooked on Wii Sports will also buy Wii Need For Speed? Mainstream fads usually run their course within a year. As the honeymoon period fades, the Wii will be going up against more and more graphically impressive games on the PS3 and Xbox 360. More people will be buying HD televisions and looking for the most immersive and stunning experiences available. For these reasons, I think the Wii will be more successful than the GameCube or N64 but in the long run will still be outsold by the PS3.

Yeh Nintendo is so happy the little Wii is in the lead for now… Everyone will eventually get tired of their aching arms but hey for all those fat people this could actuall y be good for you!
Japan dosent have to worry about that they are all skinny unlike America. Dont get me wrong i like Nintendo, but whats up with the gamecube? It’s funny Nintendo said that gamers dont care about playin online games they care obout the game only. Wow there wrong they got smart putting wifi in the Ds,and the Wii. So…. Wii owners enjoy your little celebration!

  6. Frankie Ps3 Owner Says:

Why is Nintendo so happy about havin more unit than the Xbox and the Ps3?
Dont they now that the Wii is a cheap console as for the Xbox and the Ps3 are in no comparison with the Wii? The Ps3 by the way has similair traits of the Wii, since the sixaxis controller has motion sensors in it. hehehe sony is smart they kno that motion sensors and fancy equipment can go only so far.

The key is, can Nintendo of America put out the titles that are needed to bring the market TO THEM. By that I mean, not just loss leaders or 3rd party titles that no one GOES TO THE STORE TO BUY, but rather key franchise titles like Zelda, Mario, Bomberman, Metroid, etc. Yes … Godfather was a great marketing call, and maybe in 6 months it will be Nintendo that performs the Blackhand (TM) on the Playstation, but where is MARIO GALAXY? Where is Metroid — even a virtual console release of notible standing would surfice!!! The Wii Mondays ARE DEAD!

The technology is incredible. I love my Wii. I wouldn’t trade it for a PS3, PSP, XBoX360, or any other POS console. If Nintendo can pull some of its competitors’ clients over to the Wii, ‘WE’ might just be able to really make this “fad” into a Industrial Standard.

I would have classified Punch-Out,Tecmo Bowl, Excite Bike, Castlevania and probably a couple others as huge releases for the VC (but maybe that’s just me – I’m old school).

  9. Frankie Ps3 Owner Says:

Nintendo needs to focus not just on rated E games and reach out to the older people who get tired of little cute characters…….

  10. Frankie Ps3 Owner Says:

If i had a Wii i would trade it for a another Ps3 not a psp or Xbox because microsoft are money hungry. Yeh the Wii has some potential but, it’ll just be another dust collector like the gamecube and nintendo 64 which i have and rarely use because the life span of it is short and trust me i take good care of my consoles.

  11. Frankie Ps3 Owner Says:

I love my psp but Sony has really slacked on the games it has, But i only play socom ftb which is so far the best online multiplayer game for the psp so far. Even though the hacking and glitching gets pretty anoying.

  12. Mike Says:

Older people that get tired of the characters?

I am an older people and one of my absolute favorite thing about the Wii is the VC. I buy almost every one they release. Tecmo Bowl, Excite Bike, Contra, Punch Out, Kid Icarus – too many good games to list really.

I think with a 20 year library on the VC titles alone there’s plenty to be interested in – for ‘old gamers’ in particular.

As a matter of fact if you told me I could drop $250 bucks and have a console that did nothing but what the VC does now – I’d think it was a good deal.

  13. Frankie Ps3 Owner Says:

yeh not everyone is like you buddy

  14. Ikiris Says:

The oldschool gamers wont get tired of the older characters, obviously. I was raised on Metroid and duck hunt, so Wii Play and when it comes out the new metroid games are on my to get list (actually, I already have Wii Play..)
Aswell, who could forget a classic like Mario? However, its true that older players do need something more to keep occupied. People who didnt play the oldschool nintendo games will likely find Mario Party less intresting than someone who has been a long time player of Nintendo games.

As for Nintendo being happy about selling more consols than their compeditors, of course they will be. The Wii is selling frighteningly well, and has not slowed down consideribly about a half a year now. Yes, its possible that the fad will wear out, but it wont die out. A vast majority of people are not going to easily fork out the $699.99 (canadian price) for a PS3, when the Wii would only cost them $289.99 (again, Canadian price.)

I work in retail, and right now the PS3 is just too expensive for the majority of gamers to consider, while the 360 has been out for a year and a half or so already, and has had its sales grind to a snails pace, not to mention their lack of sales made in most of the east.

You say Sony is smart for using sixaxis? Well, the proof is in the pudding as they say. We will see how Sony’s sales do in the future.

  15. Mike Says:

Quote Frankie Ps3 Owner “yeh not everyone is like you buddy”

Oh that may be true, but so far the sales numbers suggest I’m not exactly alone in the world.

  16. Frankie Ps3 Owner Says:

nintendo wii gonna be a nice dust collector…in like 3 years like gamecube muahahahhahahahahhah!

  17. Frankie Ps3 Owner Says:

well most of all the adults i play with would get the wii if it had more mature games. playstation is the only platform to have the most generes.
