Mega Man 9 First Impressions

Wow, I’ve been frequenting forums across the interwebs and I guess it shouldn’t be a surprise that there’s some people who have beat Mega Man 9 already. I know that the game isn’t very long, but still that’s an impressive feat. I wish I had the time in my day to pull that off.

I have a confession to make; I didn’t instantly download Mega Man 9 when I got home. Mercenaries 2 came through Gamefly, and the freaking thing took like six days so I felt obligated to give it some play time (waste of time). Then about the time I got done playing that, the season premiere of Heroes aired. I was about to go to bed when I thought, ‘I didn’t download Mega Man 9 today’. So I bought some Wii points, downloaded the game, and instantly began to pull my hair out.

Mega Man 9 represents everything that has been missing in games pretty much since the 3D era hit all those years ago. Mega Man 9 has that frustrating difficulty that made all of us break our controllers during the 8-bit era. My Wii Classic controller nearly went through the TV during my attempts at the Tornado Man stage; which was the first stage I played. My dog ran out of the room after all the f***’s, s***’s, I spewed during my feeble attempt to just make it through the actual stage. After about 10 attempts I finally made it to Tornado Man. I of course only had 1 life left, and I had no idea how Tornado Man attacked so I only had him down to half health. I died, slammed my controller into the ground and went to bed angry.

That Song Will Be The Bane Of My Existence Today

Reading that you might think it’s a negative first impression, but quite the contrary. While I went to bed angry, I began to think of how challenging Mega Man 9 is. I will eventually down Tornado Man and raise my fists in triumph, after calling Tornado Man every expletive known to man. The frustration, and anger leads to a greater feeling of success that games just don’t have anymore. I mentioned that when I first got home I played Mercenaries 2. I played the game for around four hours; I didn’t die once. Before finally being done with my game session, I realized that I didn’t really have that much fun with the title. After about 20 minutes with Mega Man 9 I felt invested. Today will revolve around me trying to just get home, and kick some Tornado Man ass. I love it.
