Nintendo have confirmed that a DVD-playback enhanced Wii console will be launching in Japan in the near future.
Speaking to gamesindustry.biz, a spokesperson revealed “There are currently plans to release a version of Wii in Japan featuring DVD playback”, although did not state exactly when the new machine would be available.
In a similar move to the Gamecube-DVD combo, the Panasonic Q, “there are currently no plans to bring this model to Europe or the US”, however.
The spokesperson also shot down a recent Edge rumour that Nintendo originally elected to release the Wii at 150 GBP/200 USD, but were pressured into upping the cost. “Price is set by retailers, not by manufacturers, so there is no truth in this assumption“Â
