Around a month ago, there was a relatively unknown game coming out for the Wii that piqued my interest. It was called Icarian: Kindred Spirits. With the game’s interesting art style, and gameplay I decided to put it on my radar.
The game is still of interest to me, but I have to start calling it by a different name: NyxQuest: Kindred Spirits.
The news first dropped over at GoNintendo, where Over The Top Games unleashed the announcement,
“Icarian: Kindred Spirits” will now be called “NyxQuest: Kindred Spirits”. For important reasons, outside our control, the team at OVER THE TOP GAMES, have been forced to change the name of “Icarian: Kindred Spirits”, our first game for WiiWare. After extensive deliberation we concluded that this decision was the most convenient both for our company, and for the game. This is why our game will now be called “NyxQuest: Kindred Spirits”
The most obvious reason for the change is the close relation it has with Kid Icarus. This would mean that Nintendo itself took issue with the title. According to this article from Destructoid, this isn’t the case,
“Before the speculation starts, I’m going to nip it in the bud: in a follow-up e-mail, Over the Top made it perfectly clear that this doesn’t have anything to do with Nintendo or Kid Icarus.”
The speculation remains however; who would have issue with Over the Top Games naming their WiiWare game Icarian: Kindred Spirits?
The only companies or entities I could find that share the name are a French Icarian Colony Foundation and a web-based workforce management company that has “Icarian Workforce Solution Suite” trademarked. My guess as to who would make the complaint is the second option. I just don’t see a French colony having an issue with a video game property.
