A report has been released by various websites that one of the biggest third-party publishers in the video game industry, Electronic Arts, has admitted to underestimating the Nintendo Wii.
The CEO of EA said, “backed a little bit on the wrong horse in focusing so much on PS3 and Xbox 360, and to a lesser degree on the Wii.”
He added that “Let me assure you that almost all of us in the industry made the same judgment — after so many transitions guessing exactly right, we got this one a little bit wrong, and we’re dealing with it now with strong investments on Wii.”
I am surprised that the CEO of EA released this statement. However, I am not surprised about video game developers and publishers who had doubts about the Wii. I had a doubt about the Wii too even though I was excited about Wii Sports from last year’s in E3.
This was a huge decision for video game makers because they need to make games many months in advance. Therefore, they were not sure if their product would be a success because the Wii was a questionable system back then. Even now, some continue to question some aspects like graphics and controller layout. I like to play sports games but I still wonder about the future for sports video games such as NHL and NBA games on the Wii.
