It’s pretty common knowledge that the Nintendo Wii is going to be one of the “it” items this Holiday season. But, Gizmodo.com is reporting that Nintendo is only making 1.8 million Wiis per month – for the whole world. Which by my count… is just not enough.
It’s going to be quite interesting how this all plays out. In recent memory, I can’t recall a single item being “manufactured” in shortages two holiday seasons in a row – can you? I mean it’s like Nintendo didn’t even plan for the Holidays at all.

Perhaps they really did doubt their new system’s popularity..?
…nah…. that can’t be it…
WII- Wonderful inpurchaseable item…
Here’s what I don’t get:
If there’s a supply shortage from last year when it was first introduced, WHY oh why is there an influx of Wii TV ads, thus increasing the demand that the company cannot already meet?
Their execuse for not planning ahead is B.S. : “we didn’t think it would be this popular, so we didn’t make enough… it’s not so easy to flip a switch and increase production”.
Hmmm… really? I understand that they are making a miniumum amount of units to ensure they cover their production costs. Making sure that they break-even on their return on investment is Business 101.
So is taking a look at previous years’ sales and forecasting, based on those sales, a conservative number for the upcoming quarters (especially at Christmas time!).
When you add the amount of money spent on advertising, one needs to increase the number of units respectively. That’s also Business 101.
So it begs the question: Does the marketing department and production department communicate at all???
A shortage of units two years in a row does not make for good customer acquisition or retention.
And, to the stores that pulled what supplies they had to stockpile for Black Friday (as some big box stores did) – shame on you!!
